A song or hymn officially commissioned and recognised as the theme-song of a particular nation. It is played on state occasions, and as a tribute to nationality. Traditionally it was played at the end of performances in opera theatres, partly as a means of indicating to the jubilant audience that the cast had gone home, and the house manager wanted to do so too. It also acted as a tribute to royal or state patronage of opera houses and companies.
